Dear Mushroom Enthusiasts,
Please join us for the 59TH Annual Charles Horton Peck New York State Mushroom Foray. This year’s foray will be held at the Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania’s Sieg Conference Center. For driving directions and details about the station please visit our web site at https://www.lhup.edu/campus/sieg.htm. This year’s Mycological weekend will be:
Friday, September 14th – Sunday, September 16th, 2012
Arrive for dinner on Friday (6-7pm); keep working on fungi through late breakfast Sunday, with travel snacks provided for trip home.
R.S.V.P by September 7th, 2012
The Sieg Conference Center has 44 bunks and one small cabin. Tent camping is available (at a reduced registration cost-b.y.o.t.), and for those coming with children or families, we can allow a small number of campers or RV’s with prior approval (up to 3 total). The Sieg Conference center is located in rural Pennsylvania with old growth hardwood forests and hemlocks. A trophy trout stream (Fishing Creek) flows through the heart of the conference center. If bunk space fills, there is a hotel within 5 miles of the conference center and tent camping is available on-site (bring your own tent). The Sieg Conference center can accommodate a large group, especially if some individuals decide to camp or commute from the nearby hotel.
This weekend promises to be a Mycological good time. We have a list for the site with over 600 species on it which will be provided to those that register for aiding in identifications. Bring warm bed linens or sleeping bags as it could be cool weather. Also bring a pillow and towel. The rustic station may fool you, but we will have labs, microscopes and have arranged for a presentation on White Nose Syndrome (Geomyces destructans) and bat decline/extinction in the Eastern United States by officials from the Pennsylvania Game Commission. If any graduate students from the Cornell, Vermont, University of Maryland, Penn State, the Botanical Gardens, Suny-esf, or any schools I have omitted, wish to present information, or help with the identification tables, please contact me and I will make it happen. The more information we share with each other in a non-formal manner, the more fun the forays are in my opinion.
Please mail Registration and checks made payable to Lock Haven University Foundation (abbreviated LHUF-Bio) to the following address: Barrie Overton, 119 Ulmer Science Building, Lock Haven University of Pennsylvania, Lock Haven PA, 17745 so we can reserve your place. REMEMBER THE DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 7th 2012. Professors teaching Mycology classes—the forays are the best when you bring students from your classes. I will reserve bunks and space for students—please send me a general idea as soon as you can, and don’t forget the tent option. I can help get a tent or two or a sleeping bag or two for students in your classes if they do not have gear, I just need to know earlier rather than later, so I can make arrangements.
Join us for this great weekend.
Respectfully,
Dr. Barrie E. Overton
