Bo and I found blewits (lepista nuda) last weekend, not in our lawn, but the woods below our place. And the Shiitake logs have been producing the past few weeks as well. But the lawn is filled with Agaricus andrewii, some shaggy manes ( Coprinus comatus ), and the brown Agaricus that may be A. porphyrocephalus.
Although A. campestris is the first mushroom that I collected as a child ( with my mother's supervision)(and I wonder if we weren't collecting andrewii) I occasionally come across species in this genus that just don't fit the "general" characteristicts of "they don't bruise yellow or red when cut or bruised, and they don't have a disageeable odor. Not much research has been done on this genus. And some of them fit the descriptions of Agaricus that have been collected on the western coast of the US. I do spore prints of the fungi that I am uncertain of but not always microscopic views ( and I don't really get into that anyway, although I do on occasion if something really peaks my interest! ) I did do KOH on the Agaricus that is so prolific here of late. It was non reactive. Since most of you know that I am a very cautious mycophile, you can surmise that I did not eat any of them.
I'll try to take better photo's of them and post. Maybe I'll submit them to the northeast mushroom group and see what David's take on this is. If you don't follow his group, it's worthwhile.
