In past years I generally did not do much mushroom hunting between the end of morel season and the beginning of the "summer" season. But I have been taking a few walks this year and have found several interesting species new to me. Given the current period of wet weather, I'm snapping pictures faster than I can post them. I'm sure it will get dry one of these days and then the mushrooms will slow down and I can catch up. In the mean time, I encourage everyone to get out and do a bit of looking around. You never know what you might find.
Pictured below is a mushroom I have seen many times in books and that I once tried to grow (without success) in cultivation. Last year I found a brown and dried specimen on an injured oak tree not far from my home. I have been checking that tree every time I go past it and yesterday I found a nice fresh mushroom. I believe it is the Lion's Mane or Hericium erinaceus. My guide books say there is nothing else that quite looks like it, but I would appreciate any confirmation or refutation anyone can provide. The books I have say it is usually a summer or fall fruiting mushroom but, like the recent Sulphur Shelf finds, it apparently sometimes refuses to obey the calendar. Thanks as always for any advice from the experts.
